The new certification scheme works on a credit basis. One can earn credits for every exam you pass and these credits can be applied towards achieving ITIL® Expert status, the new internationally recognised Service Management Certification (there are however some rules that need to be adhered to).
The new scheme (ITIL®v3) offers two tracks – the Lifecycle track which focuses more on how ITIL® works as a Management lifecycle (similar to the old managers courses), and a Capability track which focuses on specific disciplines and processes (similar to the old practitioner courses).
As with the old certification scheme, passing the Foundation Certificate in ITSM (ITIL®v3) is a prerequisite before any other course can be taken. Achieving ITIL® Expert Certification requires 22 credits (see diagram below to see how credits are awarded) and once 17 credits are accumulated, all candidates need to do a ‘capstone’ course called Managing Throughout the Lifecycle. On completion of this exam the last 5 credits will be awarded for the ITIL® Expert Certificate. A minimum of 22 credits, which include five credits from Managing Across the Lifecycle (a compulsory exam), are required to obtain an ITIL® Expert qualification
